How Is Leave Salary Calculated in Saudi Arabia?

Saudi annual leave is paid at the employee’s applicable wage. For a monthly-paid employee, a simple estimate can be calculated by dividing the monthly wage by 30 and multiplying the result by the number of paid leave days.

Leave salary = Monthly wage ÷ 30 × Leave days

For example, an employee earning SAR 9,000 per month who takes 21 days of annual leave would have an estimated leave salary of SAR 6,300 for those 21 days.

Annual Leave Entitlement in Saudi Arabia

Under Article 109 of the Saudi Labor Law, an employee is entitled to at least 21 days of paid annual leave each year. The minimum entitlement increases to 30 days once the employee completes five consecutive years with the same employer.

  • Less than 5 years of service: at least 21 days per year
  • 5 years or more: at least 30 days per year

An employment contract or company policy may provide a higher annual leave entitlement.

Unused Annual Leave When Employment Ends

An employee who leaves employment before using accrued annual leave may be entitled to payment for the unused leave days. Article 111 also provides for proportional leave pay for the part of a year the employee has worked.

The calculator can estimate the value of unused leave once the number of accrued days has been confirmed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is annual leave paid in Saudi Arabia?

Yes. Annual leave is paid leave. Saudi Labor Law provides a minimum annual entitlement of 21 days, increasing to at least 30 days after five consecutive years of service.

Is leave salary calculated on 21 or 30 days?

The number of leave days depends on the employee’s entitlement and the days actually being taken or paid. The calculator uses the number of leave days you enter rather than automatically assuming 21 or 30 days.

Can unused annual leave be paid in cash?

During employment, an employee generally should take annual leave rather than exchange it for cash. If employment ends before accrued leave is used, payment may be due for the unused leave days.

What salary should I enter in the calculator?

Enter the monthly wage applicable to the employee’s paid annual leave. The Saudi Labor Law defines wage as the actual wage, but the treatment of particular wage components can depend on the employment terms and how those amounts are paid.
